Hay un tren de pasajeros que opera entre Adelaide y Darwin pasando por Alice Springs. El viaje dura unas 48 horas y recorre 2979 kilómetros. El nombre, The Ghan, en realidad es una abreviatura de su apodo el expresso afgano o the afghan express en inglés y tiene que ver con los camellos que se utilizaban para cubrir la misma ruta en los tiempos anteriores al ferrocarril.
La construcción del Ghan comenzó en 1878 y cada un promedio de 2 años se fueron abriendo nuevas estaciones en el tendido férreo. La última sección se terminó en 1929 y hasta ese momento esta última parte todavía necesitaba de camellos para cumplirse. Los camellos eran esenciales en este territorio y eran camellos afganos que habían llegado al país en el siglo XIX para explorar el interior del país.
El Ghan original hizo su último viaje en la década del ’80 y ahora las formaciones están bajo la protección del gobierno y una nueva es la que circula por unas también nuevas vías que están a unos 170 kilómetros de las antiguas. Hoy puedes tomarte este tren dos veces por semana aunque la crisis financiera ha reducido últimamente los viajes a un servicio por semana en temporada baja (de noviembre a mayo).
El Ghan actual comenzó a funcionar en 2.004, y sus servicios están diferenciados en tres categorías; Platinum por un precio de 2.987 dólares australianos (2.170 euros) con un camarote en suite con cama doble y salón privado, y el nivel Gold que cuesta 1.973 dólares (1.433 euros) por un camarote, ambos con todas las comidas incluidas. Y para aquellos viajeros turistas está la categoría Red Service, con pequeñas cabinas para dormir a 1.312 dólares (953 euros), o asientos reclinables a 716 dólares (520 euros). Asimismo, cuenta con aire acondicionado, coche comedor y una amplia selección de platos para degustar durante el viaje por el desierto de Australia y mágicos pueblos detenidos en el tiempo.
