Este tren de pasajeros une la ciudad de Melbourne con Adelaide desde 1887. El tren hace tres viajes por semana de ida y vuelta y entre ambas capitales de estado hay 828 kilómetros de distancia.

En sus orígenes era un tren que viajaba de noche y tenía vagones cama pero la Gran Depresión primero y después la  Segunda Guerra Mundial cambió todo y el Overland, como se lo bautizó  en 1926, entró en la Modernidad. Es decir, los vagones nuevos pasaron a tener aire acondicionado, hubieron colores nuevos en las decoraciones y también nuevos coches-cama con baño y ducha. Para los años 90 el mundo entero vivía una ola de privatizaciones; donde los estados se deshacían de las empresas en sus manos y las entregaban, a veces bien a veces mal, a empresas privadas.

Ese fue el destino del Overland. A lo largo de su historia ha sido reciclado y reacondicionado muchas veces. Hoy tiene dos servicios, el Red y el servicio Premium Red. Un viaje entre Adelaide y Melbourne cuesta en el servicio Red 93 dolares australianos (68 euros) por adulto y en el Red Premium 138 (101 euros). Si eres estudiante o mochilero el precio del servicio Red es mas barato.

Throughout this interstate journey, guests can soak up a diverse range of landscapes from rugged mallee scrubland, to fields of golden crops, over vast open plains and through gently rolling hills.

The Overland passes through classic Australian country towns including Murray Bridge, Bordertown, Nhill, Dimboola, Horsham, Ararat and Geelong. Whichever direction you travel, the journey is a wonderful opportunity to relax in comfort, mingle with fellow travellers and delight in the ever-changing countryside along the way.

The Overland runs a daylight service between Adelaide and Melbourne in both directions, three times a week. Guests also have the opportunity to disembark from the train to explore the many regions and towns The Overland passes through along its route, then simply re-join the train on another scheduled service that suits their holiday timetable.

The Overland links Melbourne with two of Australia’s Great Train Journeys; the mighty Indian Pacific which traverses our huge continent between Sydney and Perth, via Adelaide, and The Legendary Ghan, travelling between Adelaide and Darwin. The Overland opens up exciting train travel all over Australia from either Adelaide or Melbourne.
